For as long as we are living, we have been following rules.

Why are there so many rules?

There are many people that don’t like following the rules because they represent some kind of restrictions. However, in reality, life can’t be placed in order without rules. Without rules and regulations as we know them, modern civilization would definitely plunge itself into chaos.

For example, if everyone could simply do what they want in a classroom, do you think that much learning would take place? Is it an ideal environment for learning? A classroom without rules would be downright chaotic.

Today, we’re going to discuss the rule definition and its importance to the modern society.

What are Rules?

To define a rule, it is a set of guidelines which has been established in all countries and communities and has been accepted by all.

The types of rules can differ from one country or community to another. The rule differences are affected by factors like beliefs, social interactions, policies, and the type of government. Violators are dealt with according to the penalties that come with the violation of the rules.

Therefore, rules are a beneficial tool to guide and monitor the interactions between the members of the society.

There are rules that are considered informal like the ones that are set in a home or schools. Breaking these guidelines will result in consequences like being grounded or detention. On the other hand, there are codified rules and are expected to be followed by every member of the community. Breaking these regulations will have more serious consequences like going to jail or paying a fine.

Why Rules are Important

Why should we follow the guidelines that have been established in our society?

Protect the Weaker Class

Rules are established to protect the weaker class in the society since they are at a disadvantage if such regulations are broken. When rules are properly set and followed, they provide a stable environment and human co-existence in a community, resulting in peace and order.

Rules are set to be in accordance with the desired results. For example, regulations are used in schools in order to promote discipline and trust, in a bid to provide a peaceful learning environment for the students as the desired result.

Keep the People Safe

Often times, the simplest of rules help protect us from ourselves. Like not driving through an intersection when the light is red or not touching an electrified fence.

If you just look at all the traffic regulations we have, you’ll see why they are set in place. Just imagine how many devastating accidents will happen if everyone just decided to disregard the rules.

Also, the rules are there to protect us from one another, or more specifically, from our basic self-serving instincts and self-destructive habits. If we don’t have the rule of law that punishes criminal acts like murder and stealing, then you can trust that crime rate will skyrocket. Even the most basic rule like proper garbage disposal needs to be followed. Otherwise, the very planet will be at risk and will the entire humankind.

For Sports and Recreation

Without the existence of rules and regulations, is it even possible to have games and sports?

A game is only as good as its rules. Participants perform actions according to the regulations and are judged based on how the rules are followed. True enough, we enjoy playing or watching games and sports because everyone agrees on what the rules are. In games and sports, not following the rules is frowned upon.

Job Security

Obeying a company or organization’s policies will not guarantee that you will have that job forever. However, adhering to these regulations ensure that you won’t lose your job as a result of your own inability to follow the rules.

If an employee fails to follow the company rules, he or she will receive a “write-up.” It will take more than one minor offense to get an employee fired but a write-up is still reflected on your record. When layoffs happen, the person with many offenses is more likely to be let go than someone with a clean record.

This is also true for promotions.

An employee with a clean record is more likely to be in a better position for a promotion than someone who doesn’t.

Rules are Rules

All rules and regulations are designed to protect the lives of all individuals. These guidelines show a community member what is right to do and to what extent. As time goes, new rules are needed or old ones are changed in order to fit the present state of the society.

Without rules, any country or society will not be able to function in any way.
